Fever, 1793 is a story about Matilda Cook also known as Mattie. Author Laurie Halse Anderson portrays Mattie as a fourteen year old girl who’s sick and tired of listening to her mother. Mattie and her mother, grandfather, and Eliza who is the Cooks coffeehouse cook. Mattie lives in Philadelphia during 1793 when the wide spread yellow fever.
The author’s description of this time period is very true. Laurie says “this was a time of distress and panic. Sources say that “this disease shook the foundation of the largest city in the united states”. Personally I believe them because what ever I look up tells of a supreme chaos as the fever spread throughout Philadelphia.
Mattie really doesn’t trust herself at the beginning of the story. But as the story goes on Mattie becomes brave and strong. When the two robbers invaded the coffeehouse Mattie handled them with supreme poise and sophisticated. Through the story Mattie also learns the importance of helping people, when Mattie finally found Eliza she helps her take care of the people who were infected with yellow fever.
I loved Fever, 1793, its very real that’s what makes me love it. Fever is a great book, it’s filled with adventure, love and a family’s will .It’s an awesome book and I’d recommend it to anyone.
