Summary: After breaking the box shaped pot, Tree-Ear offers to work for Min to repay him. So Min sends Tree-Ear off to get wood, and on the first day of the nine, Tree-Ear didn't know that he had to put the wood in a warehouse. So, Tree-Ear learns that he has to do that, and the rest of the nine days, he has trouble doing this because he has a bleeding blister on his hand. After the nine days is over, Tree-Ear asks if he can still work for the potter so he can hopefully learn how to make a pot, and Min says yes. Now, Tree-Ear is working the dig site trying to get clay for Min.

Predict: I think that Tree-Ear will go and get the clay for Min, and Min is going to ask if Tree-Ear will show him what he knows about making clay pots.

Summary: So he's in the dig site, and he takes the first swing to slice the clay into a clean slab, and the shovel gets stuck. So he finally gets it out of the clay, and hid blister opens up again. After puting the clay into the cart, he makes his way back to Min's house ( in a troubled way, because the clay is so heavy.) once he's at Min's house, he gets food for working for him. The next day, Tree-Ear goes to Min's house before the temple bell rings. Yet again, Min asks Tree-Ear to get clay again. This time he goes to Min's house, Tree-Ear tries to save half of his food to give to Crane-Man. So he puts his dinner next to the tree, and when he gets back to it, the food is gone. So he gets angry, and throws the bowl at a bush, and accedintally hits the potter's wife. So from then on, he put his half full bowl, that Min's wife fills without Tree-Ear knowing, in a hole in the ground, that's covered by a large flat rock. by now, Tree-Ear knows how to cut the clay into clean slabs, and how to drain it, wich also makes the clay softer after the third time or so.

Summary: Now that he learned how to drain the clay and how to make the cut into clean slabs of clay, his day goes by a lot faster. But over the next few days, Tree-Ear notices that Kang is hiding something. So he follows Kang, who is the second best potter in the village, and learns that he is using red and white slip clay, that if it is used on a pot and is put into the kiln and turns into a light green and gray with black and white on it. He decides that he doesn't want to tell Min what Kang is doing because it would be stealling an idea. Soon after Tree-Ear starts spying Kang, the village folk learn that a royal commissionar is coming to town, and will be choosing a potter to make pots for the royal palace. So Tree-Ear is working extra hard to please his master, Min, and to earn the privilage for Min to teach him how to make a pot. So as the commissionar was getting docked, everybody was putting up their pots on a shelf, if they weren't looking at Kangs beautiful work on a couple of winecups using the red and white slip. now that the commissionar was looking at the potters pots, he addmired Kangs pots and Mins pots the most, and even said, "Could this be the work of the master potter Min." And after about a month, Kang got a limited commission to the palace, that only lasted a year. This blog is continued on my next one.

Continued: After Kang was given a commission, the commissionar went to Min's house and said that he would love to see him work for the castle, and that if he uses the new kind of claymaking material, wich Tree-Ear told Min about, then he would get a commission, if it was good enough. So Min is putting Tree-Ear to work by making him get the red and white slip. Lucky for Tree-Ear, he made a map that told him where the best red and white slip was. So after about a month or so, Tree-Ear asks if he could take the pots to the royal palace instead of Min doing it because he is too old. Min accepts his offer by making many of the same kind of pots, just incase some of them dont turn out so well. Soon after Tree-Ear asks if he could take the pots himself, he asks if Min would be teaching him how to make a pot as well. Min said that he couldn't teach him becuase he wasn't his son. Tree-Ear isn't feeling up to the task of taking the pots to the palace. Once the pots are done, Tree-Ear asks if Crane-Man would make a basket to hold the pots in. Since Crane-Man is an expert straw weaver, he made the best basket that Min has ever seen, it was strong and sturdy. The next day, Crane-Man made him a sleeping mat that was tied to the bottom of the jiggeh, wich is the basket. Min's wife, wich is now called Ajima, made food for Tree-Ear. Now that he was only a day from going onto his way to the castle, Crane-Man made him two pairs of sandals for the road. On the day that Tree-Ear left, he gave a monkey that he had molded to Crane-Man, and told him that he had to watch over Ajima. So as he was on his way for the next few days it was peaceful, and he met up with a town on each day like Crane-Man had told him. But on the fifth day, he had to stay overnight in forest, and he made a fire. But in the middle of the night, he heard a strange sound like an animal. It was a fox. and he was scared so, he hid under two large boulders and slept there all night. The next morning, he woke up and made his way to Puyo, and Crane-Man had told him of the Cliff of Falling Pettals, where a bunch of girls had fallin off of it as a brave act and Tree-Ear was going to the top of that cliff. To be continued.....

Continued: So now that Tree-Ear is at the top of the cliff, he finds himself next to a stranger that had appeared out of nowhere, and the guy tried to steal his jiggeh. But over the time that he was working for Min, he grew strong, and was able to keep it from one bandit, but not two, wich the other one came up about half way through the fight. So the two bandits took his money, wich Min had given him, some of his food and dropped both of his pots. But he never heard the second one hit the ground. So he whent down the cliff and was looking for the other pot and all he found was the remaining shards of it. So he took his shard od the pot to the royal palace, wich he was only half way to it, and asked if he could talk to the commissionar in his humblest voice, and the gaurd said that he could. as he as walking towards the palace, he noticed thatthe roof of the houses was leftover shards of broken pots. So now that he is in the royal palace, he meets the commissionar and says that he likes the shard that he sees. So the commissionar says that he has a boat ready for him to get a ride home. So the next day, Tree-Ear gets a ride home, and he reaches the village of Chu'lp'o in about a week. Once he's home, he goes to talk with Min and he says that he got the commission. But Min has bad news. Crane-Man died of freezing, because he was so old when he fell in the water, he froze. Now that Tree-Ear has no place to live, Ajima asks if he wants to stay with her, but under one condition. His new name must be Hiung-Gu, which Min's real son, Hiung-Gi, died. Now that everything was back to normal, he woke up every morning and got clay for Min, who was still his master, and one day, Min finally asked for Hiung-Gu to come inside and make a pot for him.
THE END

Sorry, i forgot to do the reading strategy.

Predict: I think that Hiung-Gu is going to make a pot as beautiful as Min's and give it to him. Then, the next time that the commissioner back, he will get the commission

Character Sketch: The main character of the story, A Single Shard, is a hard working guy that is determined to do his masters bidding. Not only is he a hard worker, but he's friendly. He's about sixteen years old, and about 5'9". He's homeless, so you could expect him to be really skinny and not well fed. And, you could make a prediction that he prablably has only one pair clothes.

A Single Shard

“A Single Shard," by Linda Sue Park, is about a boy named Tree-Ear who travels across twelfth century Korea to do his master’s, Min, who is a master potter, bidding for him. Tree-Ear is a twelve year old orphan who lives under a bridge with a man named Crane-Man in the village of Chu’lp’o.

The village of Chu’lp’o is, from my prospective, a mountainous place with an excellent supply of clay for making pots. On the small place next to the water where the village of Chu’lp’o is, there is a master potter named Min who is the best at making celadon pots. Chu’lp’o is right next to the Pacific Ocean, but they don’t fish there.

The main character of the story, Tree-Ear, does a number of things in the story, like when he carries the huge, probably about 160 pounds, wheelbarrow of clay to take to master Min. I also think that the fox that he encountered wouldn’t have come to his camping site. But I do think that he could have overpowered the bandit when he tried to take his jiggeh from him because he would grow strong from working for Min.

I think that this is a good book because it teaches a lesson. The lesson is that even though you don’t have everything that you need, you should still try. It’s just like when I was in science class and I only had about 1/8 of what I needed, but I still turned it in and I got one of the higher scores in the class. I mean, I also really liked this book because I was always entertained and it kept me interested. I would recommend this book to anyone because I thought that it was the best book that I have ever read, but I’ve only read like seven books in my whole life.
